Oklahoma State University dean says engineers either keep learning or fall behind
Continuing education for engineers is critical because things are always changing. Oklahoma State University's Dean Paul Tikalsky said he and his faculty have to keep learning along with their students because knowledge is doubling every year and a half. "It's an exciting time to be in this field," said Tikalsky, dean of the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology.

Occupations in engineering are growing fast, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. It reports the median annual wage for architectural and engineering jobs is $77,900, more than double the average for all occupations.

Engineers with a bachelor's degree don't want to put off earning a great salary for two years to earn a graduate degree, Tikalsky said. That makes online master's degree programs popular. OSU offers three master's of engineering programs 100 percent online for working engineers who want to rise into management positions. A huge number of those positions are opening up due to retirements, Tikalsky said. "Technology continues to move forward. If you don't keep learning, you fall behind. It will make it difficult to manage the next generation," he said.

A fourth program in engineering technology specific to fire safety and explosion protection also is offered online, but requires some time in the lab on campus, he said.

The list used the National Center for Education Statistics' College Navigator database and based rankings on four criteria: tuition, U.S. News and World Report's recognition as a Top Online School for Master's Engineering Programs, customization options and "Wow Factor."

Tikalsky said OSU's online lectures are high-definition quality productions. The quality of both the production and the signal that goes out are "wow factors" for OSU's program, Tikalsky said. Students can watch the lectures live or any time that is convenient. They may watch live, and watch again later to review for a test. The online programs also offer live chats with professors. Many students in the master's of engineering and technology management program are service members — both people seeking a promotion and those nearing retirement who are preparing for a civilian job, he said.
